1. Skyscanner - Skyscanner is one of the best websites to use in your search for cheap flights. It gives you the option to search from any airport in the world, and also gives you the cheapest dates possible if you are felxible.
2. Flexibility - The more flexible you are, the better chance you have of locking in cheap flights. Simply look for cheap flights at some point in the future, and then adjust your travel schedule to your long haul flight.
3. Avoiding Hidden Fees - Sometimes you may think you have secured a cheap flight, until baggage fees and taxes bring you right back to square one. Make sure you check airline websites to see baggage limits, and other fees. One way I avoid paying extra for bags is by packing small and light, usually in a large backpack with only a few pairs of clothes.
4. Book Early - The earlier you book the cheaper your flights will be, almost always. Keep an eye on rates.
5. Travel Insurance - I always buy travel insurance when I travel, especially when my itinerary has a lot of flights or connecting transportation. One missed train or cancelled flight can really derail your trip or hurt your wallet.
