Some tips and anticipations useful for visiting Santorini
1. Renting a car - If you are visiting Santorini in winter, it is advisable to rent a car. Remember the island is small and hilly, so get a vehicle and transmission you are comfortable with. Cars are affordable and all you need is an international drivers permit from Triple A. If you are visiting in the summer, there are buses and taxis that service the whole island. In the summer you can usually stay in one part of the island and just walk around that part, making day trips to other towns on the island. Oia is the best place to stay in my opinion, but probably the most crowded.2. Beaches- Since Santorini is a volcanic island there aren't as many beaches as you'd expect. Some of the nicer ones we visited are red beach and black beach. There is also more beachfront along the opposite side of the island away from the towns, but they aren't as developed.3. Accomodation - There aren't a lot of major hotels on Santorini, so airbnb is your best bet. Summer time will be expensive, and winter is only slightly cheaper since so few people visit the island at this time. The closer to Oia and Fira you are, the more expensive your accommodation will be.4. Food - There are many restaurants open in the summer time, but the selection is much smaller in winter. Be prepared to do a few searches and make some calls to find the best food!
