For eight months as a prison guard, I witnessed life in prison and how a prison is administrated. I shall focus on Gen Y’s perceptions of prison and inmates, and highlight common prison myths and misconceptions.

Combining the number of people in prison and jail with those under parole or probation supervision, 1 in ever y 31 adults, or 3.2 percent of the population is under some form of correctional control.

There are two measures for non-fatal violence-the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) and the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). NCVS measures rape or sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated and simple assault.
