Democratic Party

The Democratic Party, represented by a donkey and the color blue, is the oldest of the parties. Forming the opposition for the Whig Party in the 1830s, it was created by Martin Van Buren and Andrew Jackson. It originated as the party of farmers and urban workers; since the Great Depression, it has generally been aligned with more liberal ideology, including social programs and larger government spending.
