Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), also known as tic douloureux, is a disorder of the fifth cranial nerve (trigeminal nerve). The disorder is sometimes broken down into type 1 and type 2. TN type 1 (TN1) is characterized by attacks of intense, stabbing pain affecting the mouth, cheek, nose, and/or other areas on one side of the face.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a disorder of a nerve that normally supplies feeling to the face with a syndrome of one-sided shooting facial pain. This nerve - the trigeminal nerve (5th cranial nerve) - branches into three divisions as it leaves the skull, one supplying sensation to the forehead, one to the cheek, and one to the lower jaw. Any or all of the three divisions may be affected.

Trigeminal neuralgia, also known as tic douloureux, sometimes is described as the most excruciating pain known to humanity. The pain typically involves the lower face and jaw, although sometimes it affects the area around the nose and above the eye. This intense, stabbing, electric shock-like pain is caused by irritation of the trigeminal nerve, which sends branches to the forehead, cheek and lower jaw.
