One of three species under the genus Psammobates, the tent tortoise is indigenous to southern Africa. Named for the unique structure of the carapace, the tent tortoise has three subspecies and all are becoming rare due to habitat destruction and collecting for the illegal pet trade.

Namaqualand Tent Tortoise

Because they occur primarily in the winter rainfall parts of the Namaqualand region, it can be assumed that they would include a variety of succulent plants in their diet, especially during the drier times of the year.
