Oscars 2011: Melissa Leo wins the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress | NJ.com
Melissa Leo has won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her scrappy role in "The Fighter." It's her first Oscar win. In "The Fighter," she plays Alice Ward, the passive-aggressive mom to half-brother boxers Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale) and up-and -comer "Irish" Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg). "The Fighter" was nominated for seven Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress (for both Leo and Amy Adams). In January, Leo won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. This is not the first time she's been in contention for an Oscar. In 2009 for her role in "Frozen River," Leo snagged a nomination for Best Actress. She lost to Kate Winslet in "The Reader." The character actress is perhaps best known for her role as Det. Sgt. Kay Howard in the TV series "Homicide: Life on the Street" from 1993–97. Leo has also been a cast member of "All My Children" and "The Young Riders." Her film work includes such movies as "21 Grams," "Confess" and "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada." Currently, she is a regular on the acclaimed HBO series "Treme."
