David Swift, whose writing, direction and appreciation of young Hayley Mills' natural histrionic resources contributed so much to Pollyanna, repeats the three-ply effort on this excursion, with similar success. Swift's screenplay, based on Erich Kastner's book, Das doppelte Lottchen, describes the nimble-witted method by which identical twin sisters (both played by Mills) succeed in reuniting their estranged parents after a 14-year separation during which the sisters were parted, unbeknownst to them, in opposite parental camps.
