MIckey Welch | Hall of Fame
Michael “Mickey” Welch became the third pitcher in baseball history to reach 300 wins on July 28, 1890 against Pittsburgh. The only two hurlers that preceded him were Pud Galvin and Timothy Keefe.
The right-hander relied on an assortment of off-speed pitches to keep him effective on the mound. He was able to find continued success using the number of different pitches he had in his artillery, and taking time to understand the players he was throwing to.

Mickey Welch | Society for American Baseball Research
A far-from-giant Giant, pitcher Mickey Welch formed a cornerstone of the celebrated National League franchise founded in New York. Generously listed in baseball reference works as 5-feet-8 and 160 pounds, the undersized right-hander pitched and won the Giants’ [then Gothams’] inaugural NL game in 1883. Two years later, he compiled 17 consecutive pitching victories on the way to posting a 44-win season, still the all-time franchise record. By the time he departed the major league scene in early 1892, Welch had become only the third pitcher in big league history to record 300 wins.

Mickey Welch - Wikipedia
Michael Francis Welch (July 4, 1859 – July 30, 1941), nicknamed "Smiling Mickey", was a Major League Baseball pitcher. He stood 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 m) tall and weighed 160 pounds (73 kg). He was the third pitcher to accumulate 300 career victories. Welch was born in Brooklyn, New York, and played 13 seasons in the major leagues, three with the Troy Trojans, and 10 with the New York Gothams/Giants.[1] He was very successful with an effective curveball, a change of pace, and a version of the screwball. During his 13 major league seasons, he posted 20 or more wins nine times, seven in succession.[2]
