The widow's naive teenage daughter wants to be a professional gambler and she convinces her mother to date a British man who's new in town. The widow falls for the Brit, a professional gambler who pretends to be in the fishing business.

Sun-Times Film Critic 'Passionada" assembles the elements for a soap opera, and turns them into a bubble bath. The movie is populated with lovable rogues, cuddly coots, passionate widows and beloved ghosts, and is about a romance between a professional gambler and a torch singer in mourning, but somehow all of these elements fall into place; we feel surprising affection for these people from New Bedford, Mass. The movie has been directed by Dan Ireland, from a first screenplay by the brothers Jim and Steve Jermanok, whose freelance writing credits sound like homework for this story: Steve wrote the book New England Seacoast Adventures, and here they create an emotional adventure for a down-and-out gambler and a Portuguese-American widow who sings of lost love and vows she will never marry again.

Dan Ireland directs the romantic comedy Passionada about the Amontes, a Portuguese-American family living in New Bedford, MA. Celia Amonte (Sofia Milos) mourns the loss of her beloved husband, a fisherman who died at sea. She lives with her teenage daughter, Vicky (Emmy Rossum), and her mother-in-law, Angelica (Lupe Ontiveros). During the day she works as a seamstress in a textile mill, but in the evening she sings sad, melodic fado music. The rebellious Vicky sneaks out at night to go to the casino where she meets the charming British gambler Charlie Beck (Jason Isaacs). They strike a deal with each other: Charlie will teach Vicky how to count cards if she helps him get a date with her mother. Also starring Seymour Cassel as Charlie's friend Daniel.
