It seems we’ve reached the tipping point in the food labeling movement and Dannon is one of the leaders. Although mandatory labeling has yet to be required, major food companies are taking this step on their own. We’ve seen Mars, Kelloggs, and General Mills all decide to label the GMOs in their food in the interest of transparency. Now the cow is tipping too, with one of America’s leading conventional dairy companies pledging to make some major changes.

Anti-GMO labeling groups are at it again. The "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act," officially H.R. 4432, and more accurately dubbed the "Deny Americans the Right-to-Know" Act (DARK), came before the 113th Congress last year, and is likely to appear before the 114th Congress this year in a new bill. To stop this from happening, this week has been designated "National Week of Action to Label GMOs" to prevent another DARK Act from coming to Congress and possibly passing. So apparently the members of the subcommittee on Horticulture, Research, Biotechnology, and Foreign Agriculture decided to have a session discussing the labeling of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). Michael McAuliff over at The Huffington Post wrote a very nice summary of the meeting available here. Essentially, the subcommittee in their infinite wisdom backed by four "experts" concluded that the American people are simply too ignorant to know what is in our food. Those "experts" include: a dairy farmer that feeds her cows GMO feed, a director under the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (a notoriously pro GMO foundation), and a professor that works for a university that has received over 26 million dollars from Chobani (GMO Dairy) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

On December 10, 2014, Wednesday of this week, a hearing will take place to discuss a bill named the "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2014," sponsored by Rep. Mike Pompeo of Kansas. Despite its misleading name, this act would stop the GMO labeling movement that is gaining strength and popularity across the nation in its tracks.

"Big AG," America’s top agricultural and biochemistry firms are leading an assault on organics, non-GMO foods, proper labeling and healthy choices. There are a lot of misconceptions about GMOs out there. I suppose when food becomes mostly about science and patents, it can get a bit confusing. I’m here to set the record straight on a common area of confusion, hybrids v. GMOs

Iconic Cheerios has now declared their yellow box original brand GMO free. According to Cheerios, the ingredients have been GMO free for a couple of weeks. Soon boxes will be labeled "Not Made With Genetically Modified Ingredients." One thing to note is these boxes CAN contain trace amounts of contamination because of the manufacturing process. I *think* that is the equivalent of a package saying it’s "nut free" but made in a factory that processes nuts. They obviously haven’t changed their factory, just the ingredients.

Moms CAN make a difference, but sometimes our looks can be deceiving. Some of us may live in yoga pants, while others confess to wearing baby food. We wipe noses, kiss boo boos, and comfort the defenseless.
