A motorcycle jacket worn by the late pop star Prince in his 1984 film "Purple Rain," when he rides through the woods with the movie's leading lady, Apollonia, will be sold at auction, the company behind the sale said on Friday.

It's been about two weeks since the news broke of Prince's unexpected and sudden death. Last weekend the MSR attended one of an estimated 700 screenings of the late musician's iconic Purple Rain across the country.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to remember that Purple Rain is the greatest music movie of them all. Thirty years ago Sunday, Prince's big-screen debut was released into theaters, telling the semi-autobiographical story of the Kid - a talented Minneapolis musician trying to make it to the big time while dealing with family troubles and his own insecurities.

Despite his mercurial brilliance and electrifying charisma on stage, Prince was not an actor. At least, not in the traditional sense. So when his semi-autobiographical musical drama, Purple Rain, hit theaters in late July of 1984, there was plenty of reason for his detractors (and even his most passionate fans) to be skeptical. The album that inspired the film had been in stores for a month at that point.

The movie that catapulted Prince to stardom is rolling back into U.S. theaters this weekend. "Purple Rain," starring the late pop star, was first released in 1984 and earned Prince an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.

'Purple Rain' director Albert Magnoli takes us inside the making of Prince's weird, wonderful masterpiece.

Purple Rain is a 1984 American rock musical drama film directed by Albert Magnoli and written by Magnoli and William Blinn. In it, Prince makes his film debut, which was developed to showcase his particular talents. Hence, the film contains several extended concert sequences. The film grossed more than US$80 million at the box office and became a cult classic. Purple Rain is the only feature film starring Prince that he did not direct. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score, currently the last film to receive the award. It was nominated for two Razzie Awards, including Worst New Star for Apollonia Kotero and Worst Original Song for "Sex Shooter".

Directed by Albert Magnoli. With Prince, Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos. A young musician, tormented by an abusive situation at home, must contend with a rival singer, a burgeoning romance, and his own dissatisfied band, as his star begins to rise.
