Megunticook Falls in Camden, Maine
The Megunticook River is a spillway from the lake of the same name. The 3.5 mile flow ends by tumbling down this embankment behind stores on Main Street. The water then enters the Camden Harbor, Penobscot Bay and finally the Atlantic. The word Megunticook was the Native American name for the Camden area. The translation is “great sea swells.”

Megunticook River Falls and Camden Harbor
Behind the shops on Main Street in Camden, Maine, the Megunticook River, swolen by springtime runoff and snowmelt, fills the mill pond before falling over the dam into Camden Harbor. The Megunticook River watershed covers almost 31 square miles and collects water from the towns of Camden, Lincolnville, Hope and Searsmont, 8-1/2 miles inland. The windjammers in the harbor are still covered in plastic to protect them from the winter. Camden Harbor opens up to Penobscot Bay and the Atlantic ocean to the east.

Megunticook River falls, Camden, Maine, from Robert N. Dennis collection of stereoscopic views
From the spillway of Megunticook Lake (44°14′06″N 69°05′59″W), the river runs 3.5 miles (5.6 km)[1] southeast through the town to West Penobscot Bay. The upper part of the river has raised water levels due to the Seabright dam. Below the dam the river runs as a mill stream into Camden village. In 2016 the Camden select board was alerted to low water levels above Seabright. It is considering grouting cracks in the rocks supporting the dam to address the problem.
