Far into the second half of the 20th century, the south side of Chicago was an industrial powerhouse. Meatpacking, luxury trains and steel production were three of the great economic engines driving what seemed at the time, the city’s endless prosperity.

Pullman National Monument was designed as a planned utopia and worker facility center by Palace Car Company. Visitors enjoy annual events and tours. The town was originally planned as a utopia offering workers a safe community, a better standard or living, and an escape from social ills. The town represents advancements in working-class living conditions with all industrial, cultural, religious, recreational, and residential facilities coordinated to make working conditions ideal and to move away from the typical overcrowded, unsanitary working-class conditions of the time.

Pullman National Monument, also known as The Pullman District and Pullman Historic District, is located in Chicago and was the first model, planned industrial community in the United States.[1] The district is significant for its historical origins in the Pullman Company, one of the most famous company towns in the United States, and scene of the violent 1894 Pullman strike. It was built for George Pullman as a place to produce the famous Pullman sleeping cars.[2]
