Oct. 26, 1999 Former president of South Africa and Nobel Peace prize winner Nelson Mandela delivers his views on world affairs on the occasion of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

He was the co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize with F.W. de Klerk in 1993.

He had the means, power, and justification to "pay back" the South African whites for generations of institutional oppression. Yet he chose not only to forgive, but to actively seek reconciliation at a national level.

Nelson Mandela and President F. W. de Klerk today shared the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the end of the apartheid state and collaborating in the quest for a nonracial democracy.

He had gone to jail as an angry, frustrated young activist. In prison the fires of adversity purified him and removed the dross; the steel was tempered.

It’s easy to forget how recently this international hero was viewed as a terrorist and enemy of the state.

Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African leader who worked to end apartheid, a system of racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa from 1948 to 1991. Mandela was later elected as South Africa’s first black president, and he served as president from 1994-1995.
