Martin Scorsese's The Departed Almost Got A Sequel, Here's Why It Didn't Happen
Though he's 73-years-old and one of our greatest living filmmakers, Martin Scorsese shows no signs of slowing down or resting on his laurels. He's producing Vinyl for HBO, is producing no less than six movies in various stages of production and pre-production, and his directorial effort, Silence, about Jesuit priests in Japan, drops later this year. The Departed, the film that finally won him a Best Director Academy Award, is a modern crime classic, and as it turns out, it almost had a sequel.

The Departed
This gritty crime drama from director Martin Scorsese takes us into the lives of two cops: Colin Sullivan (Damon), smart and unabashedly ambitious, appears to be on the fast track in the Massachusetts State Police Department's elite Special Investigations Unit, whose prime target is powerful Irish mob boss Frank Costello (Nicholson). Billy Costigan (DiCaprio), street-smart and tough, is purported to have a violent temper that costs him his badge and eventually lands him back on the rough streets of South Boston, where he is recruited into Costello's ranks. But neither man is what he seems and, as they work at cross purposes, they are plunged into a dangerous game of cat and mouse in which the stakes could not be higher.

The Departed Movie Review & Film Summary (2007) | Roger Ebert
Most of Martin Scorsese's films have been about men trying to realize their inner image of themselves. That's as true of Travis Bickle as of Jake LaMotta, Rupert Pupkin, Howard Hughes, the Dalai Lama, Bob Dylan or, for that matter, Jesus Christ. "The Departed" is about two men trying to live public lives that are the radical opposites of their inner realities. Their attempts threaten to destroy them, either by implosion or fatal betrayal. The telling of their stories involves a moral labyrinth, in which good and evil wear each other's masks.
