1408

1408 (2007) is a horror film based on a Stephen King short story of the same name. Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hafstrom is the director. The cast is John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson and Mary McCormack. The film was released in the US on 22 June 2007.

The terror doesn't come from a bunch of jump cuts, or lame camera work in which the director goes out of his way to randomly throw things at you that make you jump out of your seat. There's a little of that, but most of it comes from simply fearing the room and fearing what the hell it's going to end up doing to Mike. Never has a King size bed had such an air of imminent menace, never has a mint on a pillow seemed so, well, evil.

Mike Enslin is a skeptic and author who debunks supernatural occurrences after the untimely death of his daughter Katie. After his latest book, he receives an anonymous postcard of the Dolphin Hotel in New York City bearing the message "don't enter 1408". Viewing this as a challenge, Enslin attempts to book a reservation for room 1408, but the hotel will not rent him the room. However, after being informed by Enslin's agent, Sam Farrell, that the Fair Housing Act requires hotels to rent unoccupied rooms, the Dolphin reluctantly reserves room 1408 for Enslin.

Stephen King's 1408 first appeared as a series of incomplete drafts in King's 2000 nonfiction book On Writing. King included them to offer a window into how he worked a text through revisions and had no intention of turning them into a finished piece.
