A 12-year-old boy maneuvers drugs, chess, and escape in Fresh
When 12-year-old Fresh (Sean Nelson) visits a middle-aged woman in her apartment, she offers milk and cookies, they make small talk about her daughter, and he insists that heâ??s going to be late for school. The domestic scene distracts from the real reason heâ??s there: to pick up 20 dime bags of heroin. Fresh, also known by his given name of Michael, is a drug runner, though he doesnâ??t seem to harbor delusions of kingpin glory. His job keeps him (relatively) safe from the neighborhood dealers, and gives him extra cash that he socks away.

Fresh Movie Review & Film Summary (1994) | Roger Ebert
Characters are never at a loss for words in the movies. They talk quickly, never hesitating or repeating themselves. Kids are especially articulate, like well-trained little word machines. Movies are getting to be more and more like television, where there's never a moment to spare.

Movie Review - - Review/Film Festival; Black, 12 and Complex: More Than Role Models - NYTimes.com
In addition to being the most commercially viable film to come out of this year's New Directors/New Films series, Boaz Yakin's "Fresh" is likely to be the most controversial. "Fresh" is the story of the title character, an impassive black 12-year-old who is first seen stopping off to visit an elderly couple on his way to school. The woman busily offers him milk and cookies. Fresh delivers her supply of drugs.
