For those of you who can think back to April of this year, you may remember that we brought in a coffee produced by a woman-owned cooperative in Colombia. We are thrilled to be able to share with you the work of the Mujale COOP in Honduras. The initial goal of Mujale was to combat unemployment and extreme poverty, their work has expanded to include the production of other crops, aloe vera, and processed fruits, all using organic practices. One consequence of this work is increased visibility and control to the women who comprise the COOP. On the production side of coffee at origin, women make up 70% of the workforce in the field, while only accounting for 10% of the trading and export roles in-country. Financing and training are also often withheld from women producers. We’re glad to continue to be able to support the work of an organization dedicated to giving everyone an opportunity to make great coffee, and reap the rewards of doing so. Thanks for making our first venture into women-produced coffees a success, and we’re so happy to be able to bring you another one this year.
