Birds of a Feather: Couple builds sweet nest in San Antonio

Enjoying a cupcake should be an experience, or at least that's what actor-journalist Elizabeth Chambers had in mind when designing the menu and storefront of the recently opened Bird Bakery. Opening day at Bird Bakery, 5912 Broadway, was a madhouse of cupcake aficionados, Hammer fangirls and family members as Chambers and Hammer baked, bagged cookies, frosted cupcakes and signed items for fans. Chambers recalls trips to her grandmother's kitchen, where she would sneak into the walk-in freezer and fill pastry boats with Carnathan's lemon curd. Early hits at the bakery include the lemon bars with fresh-squeezed lemon, carrot cake and Elvis cupcakes — a banana cake with chocolate chips that's filled with chocolate and topped with peanut butter buttercream frosting.
