"A Lot Like Love" is a romance between two of the dimmer bulbs of their generation. Judging by their dialogue, Oliver and Emily have never read a book or a newspaper, seen a movie, watched TV, had an idea, carried on an interesting conversation or ever thought much about anything. The movie thinks they are cute and funny, which is embarrassing, like your uncle who won't stop with the golf jokes. This is not the fault of the stars, Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet, who are actors forced to walk around in Stupid Suits.

For years, Emily (Amanda Peet) and Oliver (Ashton Kutcher) repeatedly reconnect and reevaluate their sex-buddy friendship. Though Oliver really likes Emily, he accepts what seem to be her terms, that they remain friends. His life plan is to become rich (he sells diapers on the internet during the dot-com boom). Though Emily appears "independent" and unhappy (marked by her edgy outfits, drinking, and cigarette smoking), her life plan is to find Mr. Right.

Even if you profess a deep like for Amanda Peet (I do) and Ashton Kutcher (the jury's still out), seven years of them is a bit much. That's what you get packed into two hours of A Lot Like Love, which is a lot like a lot of other romantic comedies that make two lovers of friends (When Harry Met Sally, Serendipity) and a lot not like the two witty and wise Richard Linklater movies — Before Sunrise and Before Sunset — that span the relationship between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy for nearly a decade and leave you wanting more.
