Caerlaverock Castle Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland
Caerlaverock Castle is managed by Historic Scotland and is one of the most popular and most visited castles in the south of Scotland. It is a giant medieval fortress with four huge turrets dominating its moated structure. It is built with red standstone and stands proudly overseeing the Nith Estuary and out to the Solway Firth and the English march. Caerlaverock Castle is uniquely triangular in shape but no-one knows the reason for this. Near the castle, and a short woodland walk away are ruins of an earlier castle.

The primary seat of the Maxwell clan, Caerlaverock Castle was embroiled in the Wars of Independence almost as soon as it was built when it was besieged by King Edward I.
