The primary seat of the Maxwell clan, Caerlaverock Castle was embroiled in the Wars of Independence almost as soon as it was built when it was besieged by King Edward I. Later it saw action during the turbulent reign of Mary Queen of Scots and again in the Bishop’s War when it was attacked by Covenanter Army in 1640.
