Stephen King is a name that comes loaded with too many expectations. As his first entry in hard-boiled fiction and his eleven-thousandth in his own pantheon of insurmountable literary beasts, Mr. Mercedes is a tale that is best digested if no comparison to his previous works is made.

America's master of horror, Stephen King, was awarded an Edgar for best novel last night from the Mystery Writers of America. Mr. Mercedes, described on King's website as his first hard-boiled detective tale, took the honor over books by Ian Rankin, Karin Slaughter, and others.

Mr. King's selection is the first time that the organization, the National Book Foundation, has awarded its medal to an author best known for writing in popular genres like horror stories, science fiction or thrillers. Very little of Mr. King's work would qualify as literary fiction.
