The Balrog are an ancient race which has existed since before the Elves. They were once servants of Morgoth, the dark lord that proceeded Sauron, but later either died or fled to the deep places of Middle Earth. The Fellowship has the misfortune to come upon one in Moria and the creature is dispatched by Gandalf after a very long battle.
