The Sofia History Museum – The Splendour of the Past
The standing exposition at the Sofia history museum in the Bulgarian capital the public has been looking forward to opens today, the Day of Sofia, September 17. The exhibition is housed by the former central mineral baths building – one of the finest edifices in the centre of Sofia. The museum itself was built in Banski (baths) square back in 1928 but the building was razed to the ground during the bombing of Sofia in World War II.

A decision on the founding of a town’s museum was taken back in 1928 at the proposal of the Mayor Vladimir Vazov. Initially the Museum combined the functions of a town’s museum, library and archives. It is one of the oldest museums in the Capital along with the National, Military, and Archaeological Museums.

Sofia History Museum - Sightseeing in Sofia
This museum dedicated to the 'History of Sofia' is housed in the magnificent former baths building behind the mosque. It finally opened to the public on 17th September 2015, after years of restoration and planning. Eight halls with over 1000 exhibits from 6000 BC to present day; among the many items on display, there is a reconstructed neolithic house, an old news stand, printed materials, costumes and a golden carriage clock presented to Prince Ferdinand by Queen Victoria.

The National Historical Museum (Национален исторически музей, Natsionalen istoricheski muzey) in Sofia is Bulgaria's largest museum. It was founded on 5 May 1973. A new representative exhibition was opened in the building of the Court of Justice on 2 March 1984, to commemorate the 13th centenary of the Bulgarian state.
