The site is housed in a historic baroque mansion from the 18th century that belonged to distinguished characters from the ancient Valladolid, now Morelia, such as Isidro Huarte who was the father of the Empress Ana Maria Huarte. In the mid-nineteenth century the mansion belonged to Mrs. Francisca Román de Malo who was maid of honor to Empress Carlota. This was the reason why in 1864 Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico stayed in the building in his visit to the city.
