Aarakshan review by Komal Nahta Biz rating: 2/5 stars. What’s Good: Amitabh Bachchan’s sterling performance; turns and twists in the drama; the novel subject . What’s Bad: The length of the film, making it boring in parts; the sermonising effect of the drama at places; the extra importance given to commercialisation of education in the second half so that the reservation issue gets relegated to the background, comparatively speaking.

Aarakshan is the story of Prabhakar Anand (Amitabh Bachchan), the legendary idealistic principal of a college that he has single-handedly turned into the state's best. It is the story of his loyal disciple, Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan) who will do anything for his Sir. Of Deepak's love for Prabhakar's daughter, Poorbi (Deepika Padukone), of his friendship with Sushant (Prateik). It is the story of their love, their lively friendship, their zest for life, and of their dreams for the future. Centered on one of the most controversial issues of recent years, with the Supreme Court's order on reservation, the story suddenly becomes a rollercoaster ride of high drama, conflict, and rebellion, which tests their love and friendship for one another, and their loyalty to Prabhakar Anand. -- (C) Reliance Big Pictures

Aarakshan touches its core theme of reservation only in its first half and that too only partially and peripherally. The second half seems to narrate an altogether unconnected story.

Aarakshan (Reservation) is a 2011 Indian Hindi drama film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. Directed by Prakash Jha, the film is a socio-political drama based on the controversial policy of caste based reservations in Indian government jobs and educational institutions. The film also stars Prateik Babbar and Manoj Bajpayee and was released on 12 August 2011 to mostly mixed reviews. However Aarakshan fails to score at the box office. [3]
