Salzburg, because of its beautiful scenery, many historical sites and the Festival, is one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in the world. And Salzburg is a university town with a long tradition. The University of Salzburg was founded by Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron, the namesake of the University, in 1622.

We are very happy that you have chosen our university for your international or Erasmus exchange year. The University of Salzburg is both a very old, and at the same time, a very new and modern university. It was first founded in 1622 as a Catholic Benedictine University by the former Arch-bishop of Salzburg, Paris Lodron, who was born in the small northern Italian city of Rovereto. At the beginning of the 19th century, the university was closed down during the Napoleonic Wars and was not reopened afterwards, when Salzburg became part of the Austrian Empire.

The number of international students coming to study at the University of Salzburg has increased over the past several years. Approximately 30 percent of all students studying at the university are foreign nationals. They either attend regular courses within the framework of an exchange program, or they are full-time, degree seeking students.
