As the sole technology and natural sciences university in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, the TU has acquired an impressive reputation since it was founded in 1970. The magazines Spiegel and Focus give it top rankings in a number of categories. In a national competition held in October 2009 it was given an award for “excellence in teaching”.

The Technical University of Kaiserslautern (German Technische Universität Kaiserslautern or simply TU Kaiserslautern) is a research university in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The University of Kaiserslautern has gained international reputation in research and teaching. It has a distinguished reputation in the fields of mathematics and computer science. In addition, students and (young) scientists benefit from the numerous internationally renowned research institutions, including three Fraunhofer Institutes ( IESE, ITWM, and IPM), the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) , the Institute for composite materials (IVW), the Institute for technology and work (ITA), the Institute of biotechnology and drug research (IBWF) and the Institute for surface and Thin film analysis (IFOS), all of which cooperate closely with the university for applied research.[2]
