Sweet potato batter up! Astros concessions come out swinging for 2016 season - Houston Chronicle
The great responsibility to feed millions of Astros fans - and tickets sales are way up this year - falls to Mat Drain, the Crown Prince of Corn Dogs for Aramark, the company that operates the ballpark's concession stands. The Astros unveiled their new menu items last week. Street-style taco with pulled pork, charred pineapple slaw and sweet chili drizzle. ($10, Sections 126, 409) Sweet Potato Waffle Chicken Sandwich: A grilled chicken breast between two homemade waffles with sweet potato purée mixed in the batter. Topped with Greek yogurt, baby spinach and sliced tomatoes. Think of it as a thick slab of super lean bacon, breaded and deep fried, and topped with grilled pineapple, gochujang sauce and chili lime salt. Kettle chips topped with jalapeño queso, picadillo ground beef and assorted nacho toppings. ($11.50, Section 126, 409, Urban Bistro, Section 226) In other peanut and popcorn news, the Astros have done away with the "All You Can Eat" stand. Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich, Philly Cheesesteak, Stromboli, Pot Pies, Mac and Cheese Meatballs. Get them at Sections 116, 131 and 418. Because of expected larger crowds, new menu items that don't hit success early will get the hook more quickly than in past years. Bring your "Eating Pants" with deep pockets - take a few for the ride home. Crown Prince Drain's favorite thing to eat at Minute Maid Park? If you see Drain walking around the stadium, please, no autographs until after the seventh inning. Aramark also does the food for businesses, hospitals, offshore rigs and elementary, middle, high schools and colleges - including a certain university in San Antonio where the food could stand a little improvement.
