  • Last Week At The Magpie Farm: My Chicken Math Explained!
I like my chickens, and I am a victim of Chicken Math – yes, its a thing. As of now I have 1 blue Ameraucana Rooster and 11 hens total : 6 Pure Ameraucana, 2 barred rock, 2 barrred rock cross, and 1 copper maran cross. I thought that this was a manageable number and that’s how

  • Last Week At The Magpie Farm: According to the Animals, Spring is Coming Soon!
Since January we have had record amounts of snow here. Couple that with high winds last week and we have had drifting snow making travel difficult and snow drifts 3 and 4 feet high in places on the farm. The animals have taken it well and don’t go very far from their food – no su

  • The Last Month or Two At The Magpie Farm: Oh So Cold!
December was a crazy month for me with holidays, work and the cold temperatures! But for the animals on the farm they have settled in with the cold and they have been comfortably quiet. The temperatures over the last few weeks have been between -20 and -35 degrees Celsius without

  • Last Month On The Magpie Farm: Winter Prep and New Chicks!
Whoops! It’s been a few weeks and have I been busy! Where do I start? Well, since I cannot pay my bills by raising farm animals and loving them unconditionally, I must have a full-time job. So I recently got a great job that I love, about a 45 minute drive one way from home. I am

  • Last Week At The Magpie Farm: They Are Here!
Wow! Hatching my own eggs – What a great experience! How can these eggs go from just a regular egg to this little animal in only 21 days? It amazes me. I am already attached to these little ones especially Penny, she seems to be a wee bit sassy.

  • Last week at the Magpie Farm: Babies on the way!
We are SO excited! These last two weeks have been a process of preparing, panicking and planning for our little farm. Actually, this is nothing new to me as I panic daily, and planning helps me panic less. (sometimes).

  • Last Week At The Magpie Farm: Greener Pastures & New Layers!
What an exciting two weeks we have had at the farm! Both of our barred rock hens have started to lay about one egg every day. They have seemed a bit bored lately and one or two eggs have gotten pecked I think because of this. So I have been very fast at building an extension ont

  • Last Week At The Magpie Farm: Chicken Tractor Build!
I have long been planning and pricing out how to get the chickens out into the pasture safely and on a budget. I love to research ideas to the smallest detail and research the best way to do things. I get these traits from my father who loves to consult his collected stash of con

  • Last Week On The Magpie Farm: Let’s All Get Along.
This last week on the farm was quiet, which in turn means all is good. Now if you haven’t already come to the conclusion – I tend to worry about my animals a bit too much and stress about if they are ok when I am not around. I have come up with a solution that I depend on, and g

  • This Week At The Magpie Farm: Greener Pastures and New Babies!
This last week brought springtime snow showers and some daytime rain showers as well, and the pastures are starting to green up nicely! Nobody is more happy about this than the cows as they are out there looking for every bit of green to eat. They wintered in one paddock and this

  • Last Week At The Magpie Farm: Lonely Hens And One Lucky Rooster
Last week was a sad week for us here. Out of a group of 12 baby chicks, ONLY 4 were actually hens!! I feel like that somehow we really got some bad odds there. Any thoughts on this from any of you experienced chicken peeps? Karlynn raised 6 chicks and brought them out to the farm

  • This Week At The Magpie Farm: Exploring Outdoors!
I am glad to report that the chickens are learning and not getting more difficult. When we first put them in the coop the would huddle on the floor or under the roost perches. Now at 10 weeks old they seem to have gotten the hang of it and almost all are all perching up off the f

  • Last Week At The Magpie Farm – New Friends Meet
This last week has had a lot of excitement. We have two groups of six chicks now 9 weeks old (and we have no firm number of how many are roosters or hens) – One group in Edmonton and one group in Calgary. So this last Thursday the Edmonton chicks came down and we introduced them

  • Last Week on The Magpie Farm – Creepy Crawlies
This last week was wonderfully warm. It finally feels like spring is here, the temperatures at night are just below freezing and the days have warm rays of sunshine.

  • Last Week On The Magpie Farm – Chicken Killer!
In the last seven days our weather has turned from minus 20 Celsius to plus 15. Yes, here outside of Calgary we get Chinooks and can get wild temperature swings in a very short time. It was a welcome change because I have lots of work to do outside!
