Intro to Superman The Animated Series

Parents need to know that Superman: The Animated Series is a mature, serious take on the Man of Steel. Although not quite as dark as other DC Comics spin-offs -- such as Batman Beyond and Justice League -- this adaptation still has its share of edgier content, including some innuendoes and violence.

While it’s safe to say that Batman: The Animated Series (which I wrote about extensively a couple years ago in Batman: Reanimated) ushered in the DC Comics Animated Universe, the interconnectedness of all of the comics’ many heroes and villains didn’t take shape until the follow-up series, Superman: The Animated Series. It crossed over with Batman and featured alliances with the Flash, Green Lantern, Lobo, and Steel, and expanded the breadth of the villains to include everything from Toyman to Darkseid.

Superman: The Animated Series (or The New Superman Adventures in its second season) is an animated television series than ran from 1996 to 2000 on Kids' WB!. After Batman: The Animated Series proved to be an enormous success, Bruce Timm and Paul Dini turned their attention to DC's other major hero: Superman. The new series would use the same "back to basics" approach to storyline and art stylings, giving the Superman mythos the same timeless feel that they brought to the Batman mythos.

Superman: The Animated Series ran from 1996 to 2000 on Kids WB!, and followed the adventures of Superman as he defended the entire Earth from evil. The series was the first spin-off of Batman: The Animated Series, and was also the first in the DCAU to feature multiple superhero guest stars (Batman, Aquaman, Doctor Fate, Flash and Green Lantern). The title for episodes airing under The New Batman/Superman Adventures was The New Superman Adventures, as acknowledged by The WB.
