554 Couch Gags from "The Simpsons" | Mental Floss
Since its second episode, The Simpsons has featured a "couch gag," a short segment of the opening credits that changes from episode to episode (though there are repeats). The gag occurs when the family plops down on their couch to watch TV. Over the 26 seasons of the show, the couch gag has evolved into its own art form, testing the boundaries of what can possibly fit in the opening credits of a TV show, and taking that opportunity to show what is effectively its own animated short. If you're curious, Wikipedia has an exhaustive list of Simpsons couch gags, which is suitably epic.

"Couch gag" is a running visual joke in the Opening Sequence of the animated television series The Simpsons. The couch gag changes from episode to episode, sometimes with the placement of the couch changing. In more recent seasons, the couch gags have tended to be more outlandish and absurd, sometimes showing the Simpsons family sitting on the couch in different types of media (claymation, live-action, flipbook animation, etc.).

List of The Simpsons couch gags - Wikipedia
The Simpsons is an American animated television sitcom created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The opening sequence of The Simpsons features a couch gag; a "twist of events that befalls the Simpson family at the end of every credit sequence as they converge on their living-room couch to watch TV."[1][2][3] The couch gag is a running visual joke near the end of the opening sequence and it is frequently used to make the show longer or shorter, depending on the length of the episode itself.
