Madras Cafe blends fact and fiction with flair. John Abraham, cast against type, comes up trumps as an actor.

Given the subject matter (the assassination of Indian prime minister Rajiv Ghandi) and the buzz in India surrounding the film's release, one could not be blamed for expecting "Madras Cafe" to be something revolutionary, or at the very least a provocation, which is why the most shocking thing about it is how dull it is.

This film is a political spy thriller, set against the backdrop of Sri Lankan Civil War of 1990's. An Indian Intelligence agent is deputed into a war torn coastal island, to conduct covert operations and break a resolute rebel group. He deftly manoeuvres his resources to make significant breakthroughs, amidst a scenario where the enemy has no face and the only counsel is 'Don't get caught.' At various junctures, he meets a charismatic and passionate international journalist who is following her will to reflect the truth behind the civil war. The story unfolds as their quest for the truth reveals a deeper conspiracy, by a faceless enemy, united to seize a common nemesis.

What really makes this film fall flat is the vagueness of its central dramatic thread – Tamils in Madras Café die as innocents and kill as guerrillas, but what are they dying and fighting for? That is never really explored, politically or emotionally.

Madras Cafe Movie Review | Rating: 4/5 | What’s Good: An engrossing monologue which excavates one of India’s most overbearing conspiracies left back in the dusty pages of history. What’s Bad: There is no commercialism, which has been smartly avoided so as to not dilute the subject matter. Music, background score has been kept limited to create any unwanted flavor to the drama than the story already contains. They are not really negatives just slightly deterring for the general public.
