Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument (BLM)
The Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument was established on May 21, 2014. The Bureau of Land Management administers many recreational opportunities in the monument. Aguirre Spring Campground is at the base of the spectacular cliffs and overlooks the Tularosa Basin. The 4-mile Pine Tree Trail begins and ends at the campground. The picnic and camp sites have shelters and shade trees. $5/vehicle, $15/ bus, $7/campsite, $50/group site. Dripping Springs Natural Area has over 4 miles of easy hiking trails, historic ruins, a visitor center, ADA accessible restrooms, 12 picnic sites, and one large family/group picnic site. $5/vehicle; $15/ bus, $50/group site The Sierra Vista Trail is a 25 mile non-motorized recreation trail along the Organ and Franklin Mountains. Hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking are allowed. The Organ Mountains, Organ Needles, and Pena Blanca Wilderness Study Areas are located next to one another. Two trails pass through: the 6 mile Baylor Pass trail and the 4 mile Pine Tree trail loop. The Soledad Canyon Day Use Area is in the western foothills of the Organ Mountains and has the 3 mile loop Bar Canyon Trail, which offers an easy and scenic hike close to Las Cruces. Picacho Peak, located northwest of Las Cruces, is a recreation area with over 15 miles of mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian trails. The 1.5-mile trail to the peak provides spectacular views of the Mesilla Valley and the Organ Mountains.
