Rio Grande del Norte National Monument (BLM)
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages the 242,555 acre Rio Grande del Norte National Monument (Monument). The Monument lies both north and south of Taos, New Mexico. Seclusion is easy to find, as are developed campgrounds, trails, and visitor centers. One of the highlights of the Monument, designated by Presidential proclamation in March 2013, is the Rio Grande Gorge, deeply carved through layers of volcanic rock and ash that in places is 850 feet deep and a mile wide. The Rio Grande offers some of the best whitewater boating in New Mexico. The main river and its tributaries, particularly the Red River, also provide great opportunities for fishing. In the upper gorge, the Wild Rivers area near Questa has several campgrounds and non-motorized trails that provide hiking access to the river and along the rim. In the lower gorge, Orilla Verde has campgrounds, river access sites that can be driven to by car, and several developed trails.1 The Monument is part of the Central Migratory Flyway and is known for its big game herds.
