Basketballs as spherical acoustic cavities
When a basketball bounces, the resulting compression andrelaxation after impact with the surface give rise to a"thump" sound that is short in duration and low frequency inspectral content.1 However, if a basketball is held in onehand and struck by a metal rod, the predominant sound is ametallic sounding "ping" that rings for a second or moreafter the ball is struck. In this paper we explain this ringingsound as due to standing sound waves within the interiorspherical cavity of the basketball.

Project MUSE - Our Myth of Creation: The Politics of Narrating Basketball’s Origin
From basketball’s invention in 1891, changes in the sport and in society have sparked contentious discussion over the nature of basketball, as well as over the techniques and tactics that ostensibly best embody and convey that nature. Investigating these discussions, I have identified clusters of recurrent stories, metaphors, and images arising around key events and personalities. In this essay, I analyze, historicize, and offer alternatives to the foundational story in basketball culture: the myth of the game’s creation. To do so, I first employ methods of literary analysis to illuminate the narrative mechanisms by which the myth operates. I then mobilize the historical record to offer a genealogical account of how and why the myth persists. Lastly, I present and argue for the superior value of two alternative models for narrating that origin.

The Birthplace of Basketball - Springfield College Athletics
It was the winter of 1891-1892. Inside a gymnasium at Springfield College (then known as the International YMCA Training School), located in Springfield, Mass., was a group of restless college students. The young men had to be there; they were required to participate in indoor activities to burn off the energy that had been building up since their football season ended. The gymnasium class offered them activities such as marching, calisthenics, and apparatus work, but these were pale substitutes for the more exciting games of football and lacrosse they played in warmer seasons.

History of Basketball
In early December 1891, Canadian American Dr. James Naismith, a physical education professor andinstructor at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School (YMCA) (today,Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA), was trying to keep his gym class active on arainy day. He sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels offitness during the long New England winters. After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorlysuited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, andballs had to be retrieved manually after each "basket" or point scored; this proved inefficient, however,so the bottom of the basket was removed, allowing the balls to be poked out with a long dowel eachtime.
