Longacre Theatre

The Longacre, named for Longacre Square (now Times Square), was built by producer/manager H.H. Frazee (also known as the owner of the Boston Red Sox who sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees). After Frazee fell into financial difficulties, the theatre changed hands many times before being sold to Astor Theatre Incorporated, a Shubert subsidiary, in 1919. WOR leased it from 1943-1953 as a radio and television playhouse.

This charming Broadway theater has a wonderful quality of being huge, but without a barnlike atmosphere. Built in 1913, the theater was used as a radio and television playhouse. Regular theatrical performances started in 1953. The sightlines are excellent as well as the view from the balcony. The Longacre has a seating capacity of 1,080 to 1,096.

The Longacre opened in 1913, designed by Henry Herts for producer H. H. Frazee. The theatre takes its name from Longacre Square, the area since renamed Times Square in honor of its former tenant The New York Times.
