The history of Arizona State University began March 12, 1885 with the founding of the establishment originally named the Territorial Normal School at Tempe.
Constructed before Arizona achieved statehood, Old Main represents a rich tradition for Arizona State University. Thanks to a $5.7 million campaign led by the ASU Alumni Association, Old Main has been refurbished to the period of its construction and serves as a place on the main campus where alumni can always return.
Each year since 1964, Arizona State University and the surrounding community honor the founders of the institution, and their pioneering spirit as exemplified by subsequent leaders, who established and led a humble territorial schoolhouse to become one of America’s largest and most widely respected universities today.
